Fines update a call away
The Johannesburg metro police department on Tuesday launched a service that makes it possible for motorists to find out whether they have any outstanding traffic fines or warrants of arrest via text messages on their cellphones.
The new system, developed by 2Big Mobile Applications, is to be operated by Vodacom. It forms part of the department’s integrated information management system, which has to date cost R61m.
Users will send their identity numbers to 36,997 at a cost of R5 a query. They will then be sent a password which they will send to the same number and any information on outstanding traffic fines will be sent to their cellphones.
2Big Mobile spokesman Mokgatle Maesela said the system was secure and no one would be able to access an individual’s information.
Derek Masoek, metro police director of operations and programmes, said any queries would register on the department’s computer system and cellphone numbers would be captured and added to a data base.
"Motorists will not be able to argue that they were not aware there were outstanding warrants because the system will show they lodged a query."
