Telkom to blame for degraded IS ADSL service?
Internet Solutions, the only true competitor to Telkom in the ADSL arena, currently has two 155Mbps IPC links that allow IS to carry ADSL traffic between the Telkom and IS networks.
Currently both links are running at capacity resulting in significant increases in latency degrading the service for all IS ADSL users.
According to Internet Solutions they foresaw this problem and ordered a 3rd IPC link over 2 months ago in order to prevent any capacity issues.
Unfortunately due to Telkom’s bandwidth shortages in the Rosebank exchange the 3rd IPC circuit has been delayed. To increase the capacity of the exchange Telkom will have to get authority from the council to dig up the roads to lay the necessary cabling.
An IS spokesman explained the current state of affairs. “We are now waiting on the Telkom Planning Division to confirm a date for delivery of the 3rd IPC.”
He continued to add, “We have requested that Telkom look at any other alternative access mediums that may help alleviate the bandwidth shortage that is currently being experienced,”
IS pointed out that they are looking at various means of alleviating the network congestion, but that another IPC link is the only true sustainable solution to the problem.
A Telkom spokesperson said that have implemented steps to provide relief on the bandwidth shortage by the 20-February-2006, and this information has been communicated to Internet Solutions.
Telkom pointed out that the current bandwidth shortage is from the Internet Solutions node to the Rosebank exchange and not within the Rosebank exchange itself.
Whatever the case might be, it is clear that Internet Solutions and their ADSL customers are suffering due to Telkom’s inability to deliver them with a service only they are entitled to deliver.
The needs of Internet Solutions, one of Telkom’s fiercest competitors, seem to enjoy less priority that it should.
This raises the question whether a legally protected wholesaler should be allowed to compete in the retail sphere.
Whether these were unforeseen circumstances or not, it will always attract attention and be seen as possible ‘dirty tricks’.
