New Telkom parody site pokes fun at telecoms giant
The new site, which is based on the official Telkom website, sports the slogan “F@%$ tomorrow”.
The new Telkom mascot “Jack the Cable Guy” is another source of humour as he greets users with a rather rude gesture .
This new website is hosted by Antitrust, a very vocal critic of Telkom. The address is: http://www.antitrust.co.za/antithesis/
The founder of the site, who wishes to remain anonymous, said that he got the idea while on the phone to Telkom and browsing their site.
“I was actually sitting on the phone holding for Telkom and I was browsing their site. I realised it had to be the greatest fiction created by mankind and decided to set the record straight,” he said.
His aim with the site is to inform people about ‘the real Telkom’.
“I get so tired of people standing up for Telkom and not realising how much of the little communication we get is propaganda. Telkom has gone a long way to paint itself as a martyr and a brave, struggling company.”
“All I really want is for people to see the real Telkom and figure it out for themselves,” he continued.
So far the feedback from visitors has been very positive and they thoroughly enjoy the humor.
The owner is not overly concerned about legal action, and with good reason.
Hellkom , the now famous Telkom parody site run by Gregg Stirton, was sued by the monopoly soon after its inception.
Telkom’s major protest regarding Hellkom was that their logo was being defaced.
This case was subsequently withdrawn by Telkom with costs in August last year.
Telkom said that its withdrawal of the case was for strategic reasons. It was however done soon after Justin Nurse from Laugh-It-Off secured a landmark victory against SAB in a similar parody case.
