Media24, website owner fight over ’24’
But the websites’ owner, Christopher Riley, said Media24 were bullies and that he was prepared to contest the right to use the number. He was issued with the letter in November last year.
Media24 Digital CEO Russell Hanly has said the group had no communication with Riley since then. "These websites cause confusion with Media24 brands," said Hanly.
The Media24 brands include Property24.com.
Riley said the word "24" did not belong to Media24. Although the dispute was still in the early stages, he said, he was prepared to go to court. "Media24 submitted a trademark application for ownership of the word ’24’ but withdrew the application after www.Nobody-owns24.com was formed," he said.
Commenting on the use of 24 on his property website, Riley said he had data on rental opportunities available 24 hours a day, and the same applied to his bond website.
www.RENTALS24.co.za was formed in 2004, while www.BONDS24.co.za was launched late last year.
