Google grabs more ground
The survey by Nielsen/NetRatings showed Google accounted for 48.8% of all US search requests in December 2005, up from 43.1% a year earlier.
Google’s closest rival, Yahoo, saw its share dip to 21.4% from 21%. The number three search engine, Microsoft’s MSN Search, lost 3.1 percentage points to 10.9%.
The figures come against a backdrop of a 55% jump in overall Internet search requests, or 5.1 billion per month, Nielsen/NetRatings said.
While the number of searches conducted online swelled, the number of people connecting to the Internet rose just 3% to 207 million people in the US market.
"The double-digit increase in online search activity marks a significant milestone in the evolution of Internet consumer behaviour," said Ken Cassar, senior director of analytics at Nielsen/NetRatings.
"Online search is the primary tool most people rely on to do everyday research."
Google Search saw a 75% jump in usage over the prior 12 months, with Yahoo usage rising 53% and MSN use up 20 percent, the report showed.
