FASTER, CHEAPER THAN LEASED LINES
BizNet Xpress is an alternative to the leased lines that most companies use today to establish wide-area networks and access the Internet or other data networks. Using a non-line-of-sight wireless technology, Sentech connects businesses to its backbone and provides committed information rate services across these links. It offers access speeds of between 96 Kbit/s and 2 Mbit/s nationally, with the "last mile" provided on the regulated 3,5 GHz band, over ranges of up to 20 km from the nearest base station.
Sentech product development manager Georg Wenhold says BizNet Xpress offers a number of advantages over leased lines. First, Sentech’s entry-level product is faster and cheaper than the lowest-cost Diginet product . Also, the BizNet Xpress basket of products is on average 5%-15% cheaper than Telkom’s leased lines, he says.
Some companies, Wenhold says, will use BizNet Xpress in addition to their fixed-line infrastructure to guarantee connectivity should one of the networks go down. They then enjoy higher availability and can do load-balancing, where network traffic is shared across the two networks.
Sentech’s focus initially for BizNet Xpress is financial services and retail. Companies in those sectors often operate many branches that need to be connected to a central office.
Sentech has erected 11 base stations for the network, with more planned.
