New heads for hi-tech department appointed
The new appointments were approved by cabinet last week.
The department has lost high ranking staff at a time when government is increasingly viewing the information and communications technology sector as vital for job creation, for winning foreign investments and for creating economic growth.
Rapid changes in technology are seeing telecommunications, broadcasting and computing technologies become increas- ingly blurred and have given the department a heavy workload.
The department is frequently criticised for moving too slowly to keep abreast of advances and outdated legislation is preventing industry players from making the most of new technologies.
Keith Shongwe has been appointed deputy director- general for strategic policy co- ordination, integration and international affairs.
Shongwe was previously a senior GM at the State Information Technology Agency, heading up its centres of excellence.
Harold Wesso has become the deputy director-general responsible for policy development.
He presently leads the Western Cape provincial government’s technology programmes.
He is also a member of the e Health Commission of the Presidential National Commission on the Information Society and Development.
A third move sees the department’s chief financial officer, Harry Mathabathe, become the deputy director-general for finance, state-owned enterprises and small, medium and micro- enterprises.
The department is expected to announce further steps to liberalise the telecommunications sector next month.
