Broadband overtakes dial-up in the UK
The BBC reports that dial-up connections are “in terminal decline, with connections down by a third compared with last year”.
Over the 12 months between December 2004 and December 2005 broadband grew by 59% while dial-up fell by 34%.
Overseas broadband connections are eating into the dial-up sector which analysts attribute to increased availability of broadband and competitive pricing.
In South Africa most users still connect to the Internet using dial-up connections. South Africa’s failure to fall in line with international trends is mainly due to the high cost and lack of availability of ADSL in South Africa.
Telkom has however vowed to remedy this situation with a target of 1 million Telkom broadband users by 2008.
