Microsoft increases Xbox 360 distribution – and hopefully sales

The company has added a third manufacturing partner – Celestica – to hopefully double or even triple current distribution, reported ZDNet.

Due to so-called component production delays, only about 1.5 million units were sold in the first 90 days in the US. The target was between 2.75 and 3 million.

Microsoft has announced further additions to “Xbox Live Marketplace” which is reportedly being used by more than 85% of Xbox users. This is the downloadable digital content zone for the Xbox 360.

This announcement follows shortly on last week’s news from Sony that the PlayStation3 has been delayed (further) until September. Obviously Microsoft is hard at work increasing its market share of the nearly $30 billion dollar gaming industry before the new console arrives.

The Playstation3 might possibly only hit the shelves in November, giving the Xbox 360 a full year to gain market share.
