ADSL Account theft making headlines again
Since then many reports have surfaced on readily available ADSL account information from both SAIX and Internet Solutions’ ADSL users.
Two lists of compromised accounts were recently released online with the aim of warning users about vulnerabilities in their systems. The security weakness is usually related to users not changing their default router settings and is generally not related to security issues with their ISP’s.
Default router password lists are readily available on the Internet, making it very easy for hackers to gain access to a user’s router and ADSL account information if the default settings are still used.
The online security website GovernmentSecurity.org describes the situation as follows: “A default login is a means for an end user of a product to complete the initial setup of the device or system. Most manufacturers strongly recommend their end users change these logins and passwords for security reasons.”
To remedy this security vulnerability users should change their default router username and password. It is further recommended that users change their ADSL account password on a regular basis.
Users who are suspicious of possible account abuse are advised to contact their ISP.
