Cabinet gives nod to mobile interception
This was announced by government spokesman Joel Netshitenzhe at a post-cabinet briefing at the Union Buildings in Pretoria – but beamed to Parliament in Cape Town.
It is understood that this relates to obligating cellular phone companies to monitor the purchasers of SIM cards as well as putting in place monitoring "structures".
The Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-Related Information Amendment Bill "defines obligations of sellers of cellular phones and SIM cards", according to a statement on the cabinet meeting.
The original Act became law in 2003 made personal data collected from customers available to law enforcement upon request.
