Broadband Initiative for the City of Johannesburg
The aim of the Joburg Broadband Strategy is to improve access and reduce the cost of communications for the people of Johannesburg.
The focus of this venture is to remove the constraints to broadband and wireless growth but to also harness the potential opportunities within the ICT sector. The overall goal is to enhance competitiveness within the broadband and wireless arena to stimulate growth in the economy.
BMI-T, an ICT market research consultancy, is assisting the City of Joburg’s ICT Sector Support Programme and the development of a broadband enabled ‘Smart City’. This is one of the City’s key initiatives for its 2030 vision.
The goal of this project is to explore all the options available to the City in advancing broadband and in particular wireless broadband within the City. BMI-T is currently exploring options regarding the role of the City of Johannesburg as either a provider of resources, a provider of infrastructure or as an intermediary.
