MTN’s 3G Service Ready
MTN’s 3G service provides a maximum download speed of 384 kbps and will initially be available in the CBD’s of Johannesburg, Midrand, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Bloemfontein. This service will be available to customers from the 26th of June.
The Nokia 6680, which supports both 3G and EDGE, is the recommended handset for data users. The other 3G enabled handsets which are supported for the launch are the Sony Ericsson Z800, Samsung SGH-Z130 and the Motorola V975.
The data costs involved for the 3G service are predicted to be the same as the current GPRS rates. Movie Trailers and Videomail will most likely be free services. Video calls will cost R2p/min for postpaid and R3p/min for prepaid customers.
MTN was not available for official comment, but a press briefing regarding the official 3G launch should take place early next week.
