MTN to enter the ADSL arena
MTN Network Solutions (MTNNS) today launched a competitive Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) space, offering the bandwidth-hungry market low cost VPN (Virtual Private Network) access as well as uncapped Internet access.
The new product also offers a Static IP address, which will allow users to host web or mail server. MTNNS’ ADSL solution uses a Cisco Router with built in firewall function, and hence allows for an integrated solution which provides secure access.
Mike Brierley, the CEO of MTN Network Solutions, says: ‘’MTNNS now offers VPN clients a new access medium that provides a broadband connection to their data networks. This is a low cost, ‘always-on’ connection for last mile access, ideally suited to small branch or regional home office users that require this type of access.
‘’MTNNS’ ADSL VPN solution combines the world’s leading hardware and software products with the skills and expertise of MTNNS to deliver a comprehensive, totally secure and cost-effective VPN access solution for both the SMME and the corporate market.’’
The MTNNS suite of products includes an ADSL VPN access service and an uncapped Internet access with a Static IP address). Two additional products, ADSL VPN Backup with Internet access and Concurrent ADSL VPN access with uncapped Internet are under development and will be released shortly.
For the VPN Access Service, Internet access is allocated from the customer’s VPN Internet pool. The Uncapped Internet Access via ADSL product is a separately managed Internet service and will be contended. All products include a Cisco router (with integrated Firewall) at the customer premises which is fully managed by MTNNS.
For the ADSL VPN Backup product the client will be able to choose either an Internet service from Telkom, or to take the MTNNS uncapped service. This will enable the client to keep mission critical traffic on the traditional VPN, and to off-load Internet browsing traffic. In addition, if its leased line fails, the VPN traffic can be rerouted over the ADSL link. The Concurrent ADSL VPN and Internet access product is really a hybrid of the first two products, and also allows the client to use the ADSL link to gain access to its corporate VPN, but to force Internet browsing through the MTNNS uncapped service, thus keeping this traffic out of the corporate VPN.
“There are many permutations, and what often looks simple is actually very complex. Ironically the router configurations for these low cost ADSL based products are much more complex than those of our standard VPN access.
“It should be clearly noted that MTNNS is not encouraging its clients to move from traditional leased VPN links to ADSL links, where reliability and quality are a requirement, as each product has it place. The ADSL service is a best effort service which carries no SLA. It is specifically targeted at bringing small branches and SMME businesses into the benefits of the VPN offering,” Brierley concludes.
