Nokia a sure winner in the global 3G phone market

The research done by Strategy Analytics reveals that a total of 9 million 3G (WCDMA) phones were shipped worldwide from April to June this year.

“At 17 percent, Nokia’s 3G market share is almost half its overall global total of 33 percent,” stated Christ Ambrosio, director of Strategy Analytics Wireless Device Strategies service.

Ambrosio added that whilst the 3G phone market is in the early stages of development Nokia have managed to dominate this area of mobile technology, a worrisome issue for Asian vendors.

Nokia’s phones are priced below US$200 wholesale which is one of the reasons they have managed to overtake the early market-leaders NEC and LG stated Ambrosio.

Strategy Analytics’ Advanced Buyer Panel recently awarded the Nokia 6680 as the “best-in-class 3G phone on Western Europe” stated Neil Mawston, associate director for wireless device strategies at Strategy Analytics.

Mawston added, “Step by step, Nokia is regaining ground in high-end device segments that it has lost to Motorola, Samsung, LG and others over the last couple of years.”
