UUNet dogged by peering link problems
UUNet have confirmed that the peering link between themselves and SAIX (Telkom’s Internet branch) was in the process of being upgraded on Friday.
The fault however was on the SAIX side and not from UUNet’s network.
“It was confirmed that there was no fault on the UUNet network, Telkom reported it to be a fault on an ATM port in the Telkom network,” stated UUNet.
The fault occurred because the SAIX network was not drawing the level of content from the UUNet network which it usually does. This is an indication of a bottleneck or fault external to the UUNet network.
The agreement between SAIX and UUNet is that should the ATM based infrastructure reach an excess of 75% capacity an automatic upgrade of the infrastructure is put in place. Upgrades are generally completed within 72 hours.
Currently, there is “ample capacity” between the networks according to UUNet. Friday’s problems were apparently unrelated to capacity problems.
UUNet states that they, “will continue to monitor the position carefully to ensure that the stability of the interconnection persists.”
Unfortunately users again experienced problems yesterday. Users on the SAIX network were still having trouble with accessing content on the UUNet network.
Many websites, including UUNet’s own site, were also affected by these problems.
UUNet has informed MyADSL that the problem is hardware based, and that they have already updated and configured new hardware on their side. They are now awaiting a response from other parties.
The continued problems with the peering links between SAIX other ISP’s like IS and UUNet are hopefully not a precursor of what will happen between Telkom and the SNO.
