Telkom and UUNet address recent network problems
“Contrary to speculative media reports, there are no peering, capacity or contractual issues between UUNET and SAIX,” reads the joint media statement.
UUNET decided to install new routing infrastructure on that network on the 12th of September to eliminate any problems from their side.
This move unfortunately did not solve the problem and Telkom then upgraded their ATM infrastructure on the node.
The network appeared to stabilize on Monday evening but both parties still noticed irregular traffic patterns and sporadic packet loss.
Both parties were forced to consider other avenues and worked overtime trying to figure out where the problem lay.
On Monday night Telkom rerouted their peering infrastructure with UUNET onto a different ATM port. This did not resolve the problem.
But after resetting the SAIX port the service finally stabilized and since then has remained steady.
Both operators have stated that they will continue to monitor the network and traffic flow between the ISP’s and take proactive steps if the problem reoccurs.
