Cheapest fixed-5G packages in South Africa

South African residents without fibre coverage can get a fixed-5G connection at home for as little as R399 per month, a MyBroadband comparison has revealed.
Mobile network operators like MTN, Rain, Telkom, and Vodacom have expanded their 5G network coverage to offer fixed-5G services in most of the country’s major metros.
This has made the fixed-wireless technology available to millions of South Africans.
These packages can theoretically offer speeds up to 500Mbps, depending on the coverage area and router capabilities. However, many providers limit their package speeds.
For example, Internet service providers (ISPs) like Axxess and Supersonic offer best-effort speeds with their fixed-5G plans, with just their fair usage policy (FUP) thresholds differentiating their tiers.
Axxess claims that speeds can reach 500Mbps, while Supersonic advertises a more conservative 200Mbps.
Other providers, such as MTN, Rain, and Telkom, offer packages with specific speed limits while still implementing FUPs.
Mobile network operators implement FUPs to protect the integrity of mobile networks and throttle connections to lower speeds once a specific data usage threshold is reached.
This ensures that some customers don’t hog bandwidth in an area, resulting in poor service for other customers.
MyBroadband looked for the country’s most affordable fixed-5G packages and found several options priced between R399 and R699 per month.
Supersonic offers the most affordable fixed-5G package at R399 per month.
It offers a best-effort connection up to 200Mbps, with a 400GB FUP threshold. Once this threshold is reached, speeds are throttled to 10Mbps.
This is the highest throttled speed offered with any of the packages compared.
Axxess’s Standard 5G package on MTN’s network is the next-most affordable at R449 per month.
It offers speeds up to 500Mbps, which are throttled to 2Mbps once the user has consumed 300GB of data in a cycle.
The ISP’s Standard 5G package on Vodacom’s network costs R495 per month and offers speeds of up to 500Mbps. However, it has a slightly lower FUP threshold at 250GB.
For R4 more per month, South African residents can get MTN’s MyMTN Home Internet Premium or Telkom’s 40Mbps 5G Internet plan.
The MyMTN plan provides speeds of up to 35Mbps with a 500GB FUP threshold. Once 500GB of data is consumed, the operator throttles speeds to 1Mbps for the remainder of the billing cycle.
Telkom’s package is a bit more complex. It offers speeds of up to 40Mbps for the first 1TB of data usage, after which it throttles speeds to 4Mbps for 50GB.
Once the 50GB threshold is reached, Telkom throttles speeds to 2Mbps for the remainder of the billing cycle.
Telkom’s 5G Internet packages also tie customers into a two-year contract, while the other packages are available on a month-to-month basis.
Rain is the only operator that doesn’t implement an FUP. Its RainOne plan costs R625 per month and offers speeds of up to 30Mbps. It also includes added benefits like data and minutes for two phones.
The table below compares pricing, speeds, and fair usage policies for some of the most affordable fixed-5G packages available in South Africa. We didn’t include providers who implement a hard cap.
