Will consumers ditch Skype?
According to Skype the problems with their messaging service are improving, but the continued outage for many users may cause mistrust and a subsequent migration to competing services.
Skype said that: “We are pleased to announce that the situation continues to improve. The sign-on problems have been resolved. Skype presence and chat may still take a few more hours to be fully operational. We know what our faithful users have been going through and we thank you for your patience and kind support.”
“If you are one of the minority who may still be experiencing problems, please be patient. You do not need to adjust or restart your computer. Skype will start working for you very soon,” Skype continued.
There is however a problem associated with asking people to be patient with an outage which involves their communication needs. There are various other messaging applications and VoIP services available, and many people may have started to use these services in the interim.
This is not something which any company wants to see as consumers may find the new ‘backup’ service more suitable to their needs and permanently migrate to such a new service.
With Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger and various other VoIP solutions being freely available – and functioning without any problems – Skype will have to take stock of the damage caused by the outage caused by the software glitch after it is fully resolved.
Comments like “me too…wont login….very annoying…”, “So much for the P2P side of Skype” and “Annoying that Skype down… will have to rely on Telkom for my intl. phone calls in the mean time” should concern the company.
Skype said that they will issue an update when they know that Skype is functioning normally, or if there is further material news.
“We’ve commandeered extra supplies of pizza and coffee, and we can promise that the Skype people aren’t going anywhere until they’re happy that everything is back to normal,” the company joked.
