IFP wants SABC CEO probe

Mokoetle, who was the SABC’s chief operations officer between 2001 and December 2006, took up office on January 1 on a five-year contract.

He reportedly left the state broadcaster in a huff as COO, following a damning audit report compiled by Gobodo Forensic and Investigative Accounting in 2005.

The Sunday Times reported at the weekend that the report found he had badly failed in his corporate governance duties. The paper reported the new SABC board would challenge the outgoing board’s appointment of Mokoetle, which had been approved by Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda.

On Monday, IFP spokesman Musa Zondi said the Gobodo report revealed the SABC commissioning department — which reported directly to Mokoetle –had paid about R56 million to companies involved in “collusive tendering”.

Zondi said the Sunday Times claims were disturbing and clouded the hopes that the SABC had put its woes and the controversies of recent years behind it.

It was vital that there was “not even a whiff of scandal surrounding the new CEO because public patience was running thin and confidence must be restored in the public service forthwith”, he said.

In the meanwhile, the Communication Workers Union (CWU) shop stewards at the SABC had come out in support of Mokoetle.

The shop stewards said allegations that he was involved in dubious deals were “grossly unfounded” and the result of “a barbaric and selfish” attempt by board members to destabilise the SABC.

“The new board needs to come out clean and clear of its intentions to serve the people of South Africa and not their individual egos with hidden agendas.”
