Amazon Web Services direct link to South Africa
MTN Group announced on 27 January 2015 that it would be the first African company to offer Amazon Web Services (AWS) Direct Connect to business customers across multiple countries on the continent.
Teraco announced in November 2014 that it would use the services of American networking company Level 3 for its AWS Direct Connect services.
Using its Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) network, MTN said it will give customers connectivity between their data centres or businesses and the AWS EU Ireland region.
“The relationship with Amazon Web Services is an important step in our plans to address the needs of enterprise customers in emerging markets, particularly Africa,” said MTN Group chief enterprise officer Mteto Nyati.
Customers are also assured of good service as a result of the service level agreements which MTN offers on MPLS, the company said.
In addition, customers will benefit from reduced bandwidth costs as the dedicated connection to AWS will result in a lower data transfer rate than normal.
MTN said it will be adding new services to its cloud offering in the coming months.
