Another SEACOM outage
There has been another unexpected SEACOM outage today after both the primary and secondary terrestrial backhaul routes from Mtunzini to Johannesburg failed.
While there is automatic switching from the primary to secondary routes, switching to a tertiary route is done manually, something which SEACOM is currently busy with.
According to Suveer Ramdhani, Head of Product Strategy at SEACOM, the problem whould be resolved at around 15:10 local time.
Broadband users whose international bandwidth needs are served by SEACOM can expect to experience slow or no international connectivity until the problem is resolved.
Update: According to feedback from some ISPs SEACOM connectivity was restored at around 15:24.
April outage
This downtime follows a prolonged outage in late April after problems associated with the SEA-ME-WE 4 submarine cable – which SEACOM currently utilizes to connect to London – left many ISPs scrambling to re-route traffic via SAT-3/SAFE.
Whilst the disruptive portion of the repair process was expected to last only a couple of hours, the precise chronology and actual events which led to the repairs continuing over a four day period remain unknown to SEACOM.
SEACOM recently announced that it is on track to finalize its own link through the Red Sea and over Egypt by the end of June 2010.
“With this piece of the mesh finally in place, another critical alternative for traffic routing will become available thereby further reducing the impact of network outages for African users,” SEACOM said in its official blog.
