ICASA awards pay-TV licenses

The following successful companies were selected among the 18 applicants that applied for licenses last year:

• Telkom Media
• Multichoice
• e-Sat (eTV)
• On Digital Media
• Walk on Water

ICASA received a written notice of withdrawal from Worldspace, Multichannel Television and Sentech.  The 10 remaining applicantions were refused licenses by the authority.  Reasons for these decisions will be given within three weeks.

According to Business Report ‘analysts have predicted that breaking MultiChoice's dominance in the sector will be difficult because it has been operating for more than 10 years. In anticipation of competition, the company is revamping its content by signing new exclusive TV rights.’

Most of the operators are expected to start operations early next year.
