#Hack.Jozi digital entrepreneur winners announced

HackJozi Challenge

Desmond Mongwe of MoWallet was awarded R1 million in The #Hack.Jozi Challenge for his coupon app which provides coupons to township residents to be redeemed at spaza shops.

MoWallet is a digital marketing solution based on USSD mobile technology that allows clients to place their branding on top of the underlying solution.

Neil Peters from Lazy Lizzard came second, and was awarded R350,000 for an educational app that aligns to the South African school curriculum.

Third place, and another R350,000 prize, went to Percy Lawrence from MoveThisStuff, a logistics engine that provides automated, real-time quotes for moving home or office furniture.

The #Hack.Jozi Challenge is a competition for entrepreneurs who develop digital solutions to everyday problems.

The City of Johannesburg has committed prizes valued at R5 million worth of support, including cash, to the challenge.

IBM’s Bluemix, a cloud-based platform, has also been awarded to all the top 10 teams for the next year.

The challenge began with over 140 applications, and was narrowed down to ten final teams after the play-offs and the ‘hackathon’.

Over 40 teams participated in a one-month accelerator and business training presented by Seed Academy.

The training provided intensive entrepreneurship training and technical hackathons.

The #Hack.Jozi Challenge is an initiative between the City of Johannesburg and the Joburg Centre for Software Engineers (JCSE) at Wits University.

The aim of the initiative is to accelerate visionary entrepreneurs in the ICT sector.
