Telkom’s fixed line slide continues
Telkom yesterday released their financial results for six months ending March 31, 2010, revealing declining profits and a significant drop in the company’s number of fixed lines.
According to the company’s latest results they now have 4,273,000 fixed lines, down from 4,451,000 a year ago. This equates to a drop of 178,000 fixed lines over the last 12 months, the biggest decline in recent years.
This drop in the number of fixed lines means that the country’s fixed line penetration rate declined to 8.7%, down from 9.6% in 2005.
The decline in fixed line numbers is however nothing new. Since Telkom’s fixed line numbers peaked at 5.5 million in 2000 there has been a steady yearly decline in fixed line subscriber numbers which seems to be accelerating.
