Digital TV Study Group leaves for Europe
Staff at the SADC Secretariat in Botswana have confirmed that an undisclosed number of dignitaries from some of the 15 member states of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have embarked on a tour to Europe and Brazil.
The purpose of the tour is for the dignitaries to evaluate digital broadcasting standards for television, the SADC Secretariat confirmed.
This comes after a major upset in South Africa’s digital migration plans for television broadcasting when the Department of Communications (DoC) announced that they are reconsidering all available digital broadcasting standards.
The broadcasting industry expressed confusion at the department’s position.
MultiChoice and e.tv stated that a process spanning 8 years had been followed which culminated in the national policy for digital broadcasting based on DVB-T being accepted and gazetted in 2008. ICASA released regulations based on this policy earlier this year.
The SADC secretariat made it clear that the tour to Europe and Brazil wasn’t a SADC initiative, but an initiative by the member states involved.
