Good corporate governance is key at the SABC: SOS
“We need a firm clear commitment from all stakeholders to good corporate governance in the future and that this is backed up with process and accountability,” SOS co-ordinator Kate Skinner said in a statement.
“We believe this commitment to good corporate governance and the rule of law is one of the first steps in re-building the shattered credibility of the SABC.”
Skinner congratulated newly appointed Communications Minister Roy Padayachie on his plan of action, announced after his appointment on October 31.
The coalition wanted to contribute to the minister’s plans.
Skinner reiterated the SOS’s call to extend the deadline for the nominations to the SABC board.
She expressed disappointment over the minister’s intention to push the Public Service Broadcasting and Independent Communications Authority of SA Amendment Bills through in the first quarter of 2011.
“SOS believes that there is rather a clear and overwhelming need for a full policy review process.”
Padayachie on Thursday outlined the challenges facing his ministry and said that resolving the leadership problems in the national broadcaster as well as addressing its financial woes was critical.
“What we need is a public broadcaster that functions competently,” he said.
He hoped in the near future to finalise a turnaround strategy, including filling all vacancies within his department.
His ministry also aimed to see a repeal of the 1999 Broadcasting Act and have it replaced with the Public Service Broadcasting Bill. He expected the bill, which also deals with corporate governance issues, to be presented to Cabinet in the first quarter of 2011.
