RICA registrations all-ahead full for Autopage customers
Altech Autopage Cellular announced it has registered 80% of its customer base in terms of the Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-Related Information Act (RICA).
Recent regulatory amendments have seen the effective deadline date for the registering of mobile numbers move to 30 June 2011. Autopage has no intentions of slowing down their RICA effort, however.
“We have launched a further education drive aimed at registering the final 20% of customers who face disconnection,” said Boyd Chislett, Altech Autopage Cellular Managing Director. Subscribers need to register both voice and data SIM cards to be RICA compliant.
Chislett is optimistic that significantly more Altech Autopage Cellular customers will register their SIM cards in terms of RICA prior to the cut-off date. “All communication vehicles available to us are being deployed to boost RICA registration. These include SMS, Automated Voice Messages, email and online communication,” explained Chislett.
RICA came into effect on 1 July 2009 and gave South Africans a year and a half to register their SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) cards. That timeframe has now been extended by a further six months.
Cellular users failing to register before the end June 2011 will have their SIM cards deactivated, meaning they will be unable to make or receive calls, send or receive SMSs or connect to the Internet.
Unless the deadline gets extended again, of course.
Altech Autopage Cellular is encouraging all new and existing cellular customers to register their SIM cards by presenting an ID book or passport plus proof of residential address in the form of a utility bill, as well as an active SIM card at any of their national retail outlets prior to June 2011.
“RICA presents South Africans with a golden opportunity to do the right thing,” said Altech Autopage Cellular in a statement. “The law’s original purpose was to assist the work of law enforcement agencies.”
