MWEB lands SAT-3 cable capacity
MWEB announced today that it has landed SAT-3 cable capacity in its Cape Town node.
“This forms part of our ongoing bandwidth capacity upgrades and at the same time brings a significant degree of resilience to our network,” MWEB said in a press statement.
The SAT-3 undersea fibre optic cable runs up the west coast of Africa to Portugal and is one of the primary ways in which South African data users connect to the rest of the world.
“This is another step towards ensuring a superior Internet service for MWEB customers. With international capacity on both the west and east coasts of Africa our exposure to downtime on any single cable is significantly reduced,” said Derek Hershaw, CEO of MWEB ISP.
“We will also be bringing international capacity directly into our data centre in Cape Town which will improve the overall experience for our ADSL customers connecting to our Cape Town IPC node.”
Although MWEB will be buying the capacity on SAT-3, the service will be managed by Seacom which allows MWEB to have one point of contact through a single service provider.
Hershaw explains that MWEB has made this decision due to its strong working relationship with Seacom.
“We are excited to have confirmed these agreements with both Seacom and SAT-3 and we will continue to look for ways to bring a first-world internet experience to our customers,” concludes Hershaw.
