Strange per-GB prices on mobile data packages
The mobile broadband prices of the four mobile operators – Vodacom, MTN, Cell C, and Telkom – closely resemble each other for most packages.
The price per GB for mobile data ranges between R25 and R90, depending on which packages you choose.
In most cases, the price per GB declines as the data package size increases. There is, however, one exception.
Vodacom, MTN, and Cell C’s per-GB price for their 3GB packages is more expensive than their 2GB package.
The charts below show the price-per-GB for mobile broadband packages from the three major operators, which should not show a jump in the middle.
Why 3GB costs more per GB than 2GB
MyBroadband asked the operators about the per-GB price on 3GB packages.
Vodacom said there is a slight per-GB premium built into 3GB packages as the out-of-bundle rate is 50c per MB, compared with R1 per MB on the 2GB packages.
