Mail-spying software report is misleading: Yahoo
Yahoo has said a Reuters article describing a software system that searches through its users’ emails for US intelligence agencies is misleading.
According to the report, the searches were conducted based on information that US intelligence officials supplied.
It cited former employees as saying that Yahoo was complying with a classified demand from the US government to scan hundreds of millions of Yahoo accounts on behalf of the NSA and FBI.
However, the IDG News Service reported that Yahoo disputed the Reuters article.
“We narrowly interpret every government request for user data to minimise disclosure. The mail scanning described in the article does not exist on our systems,” said Yahoo.
Google, Apple, Facebook, and Twitter said they have not received a similar request from the US government, and if they did they would not comply with it, according to the report.
