Google and Facebook to build 120Tbps cable system

plcn

TE SubCom, along with Facebook, Google, and Pacific Light Data Communication, will build the Pacific Light Cable Network (PLCN).

PLCN is a 12,800km transpacific submarine cable system that will provide the first direct undersea route between Hong Kong and Los Angeles with ultra-high capacity transmission.

Scheduled for commercial launch in 2018, PLCN will include TE SubCom’s C+L technology.

The technology doubles the available bandwidth and capacity per fibre pair over a traditional C-band-only system.

Once completed, PLCN will be the highest-capacity transpacific route – with an estimated cable capacity of 120Tbps.

“PLCN will bring lower latency, more security, and greater bandwidth to Google users in the APAC region,” said Google.
