Is bigger better in the tablet world?
Chances are many of us will consider buying a tablet PC in the coming year. Either the iPad, a Galaxy Tab, Motorola Xoom or even a Dell Streak. Choosing the right tablet PC can be tricky, especially as they are still fairly pricey. So you don’t want to make a mistake.
Most people will tell you that the smaller tablet PCs (7-inches and below) are inferior to the 9.7-inch iPad but there are a few good reasons to give a 7-inch tablet some serious consideration.
Portable
They may be mocked for looking like oversized mobile phones but this can actually be an advantage for 7-inch devices. Being just the size of a paperback novel (although slimmer than one) the 7-inch devices are extremely portable. For men, an inside jacket pocket is more than enough space for carrying your tablet PC and for women even a small handbag is big enough. At a push even a pocket in a pair of pants can accommodate these smaller devices.
Great for reading
While bigger tablet PCs boast that they are great for multimedia, smaller tablet PCs are in most cases better for reading actual books. Amazon’s Kindle software works on most devices and with a screen the size of a regular novel, the 7-inch devices have a more natural book feel about them. Also they are a little lighter than their larger cousins so easier to settle down in bed with.
Hands free
Actually not entirely hands free but the 7-inch tablets are the perfect size for holding in one hand, leaving your other hand free for input and screen control. Which makes them significantly easier to operate than their larger cousins.
Personal
The 7-inch tablet PC may not be ideal for entertaining a room full of people with your latest movie but they are easier to use in public. Most people won’t even notice that you’re reading a novel on your 7-inch device and it doesn’t get in the way when the room gets crowded. Unless of course you want to attract attention, in which case bigger is definitely better.
Not everyone agrees that the 7-inch tablet PC form is the way to go but if you’re in the market for a tablet PC then it is still worth considering a 7-inch version, despite what Steve Jobs says.
