Former torrent giant Mininova is shutting down

Mininova

Mininova – once the largest torrent site on the web – will shut down on 4 April 2017, reported TorrentFreak.

Mininova was founded in the Netherlands in 2005. After losing a legal battle against Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN in 2009, it opted to go legal rather than shut down.

After it lost the BREIN case, Mininova removed all infringing torrents and switched to an “approved publishers” model for torrent submissions.

Mininova revealed that since the switch, it has been running at a loss.

The growth of legal streaming services such as Spotify and Netflix could make torrent sites less relevant in the future, said Mininova.
