Boeing looking into passenger planes without pilots
Boeing has started researching commercial-passenger jets which will fly without pilots, according to a report by the Seattle Times.
The company said the “basic building blocks of the technology are clearly available” during a briefing at the Paris Air Show.
“There’s going to be a transition from the requirement to have a skilled aviator operate the airplane to having a system that operates the vehicle autonomously, if we can do that with the same level of safety,” said Boeing.
Boeing said the autonomous system must be able to handle emergency situations, like a bird strike.
“We are not smart enough to preprogram all those things. The machine has to be capable of making the same set of decisions.”
The system is set to be tested in a plane – without passengers – in 2018.
