Dial-Up Internet – far from dead

The number of broadband subscribers is increasing at a rapid rate, but there are currently still more dial-up subscribers than broadband users.

According to information released by Telkom there are currently around 946 000 dial-up subscribers, more than the current 800 000 broadband users in South Africa.

Telkom Internet currently has 227 066 dial-up subscribers, maintaining its 24% market share in an arena where MWEB dominates.

A recent incentive from Telkom where ISPs get some of the call-revenues from their dial-up subscribers – given that the ISP resell Telkom accounts – may further convince some ISPs to keep customers on dial-up rather than move them over to the low-profit ADSL service.
