Google’s Project Fi testing throttling to control data costs
Project Fi, the MVNO available on Google’s smartphones, has inadvertently revealed plans to offer throttling options to allow subscribers to control their data spend.
9to5Google reported that subscribers received notifications they would be throttled because of “excessive data usage”.
Google has since apologised and explained that the notifications were sent out in error.
“We’re experimenting with options for users to opt in to throttle their data in certain situations,” said Project Fi.
“We’ve heard from many of you that it would be helpful to have greater control over data costs, so we’re looking into adding more options to do this. You can continue to use your data as planned, and as always we’ll give you choice and transparency in your plan.”
