Intel to produce chip for low cost computer

The world’s leading chip maker likely will make the official announcement in early March, the spokesman said.

Intel already has a low-cost laptop, Classmate, targeting emerging economies worldwide, but it is powered by a chip at the low end of the company’s product line.

The new chip, designed for both laptops and desktops, will be aimed at the entire low-cost market — generally computers sold for 250 dollars or less — which includes notably the Eee PC, sold by ASUStek Computer Inc.
