Vodacom to launch ADSL
Vodacom, South Africa’s largest mobile operator, said that they will be adding ADSL to their current broadband product offerings before the end of the year. They will initially act as a reseller of ADSL services, but will develop an ADSL offering using their own bandwidth in due course.
Vodacom further said that Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) can bring many benefits to the local telecoms environment, and that they will definitely take advantage of these benefits. This can effectively make Vodacom a provider of fully fledged ADSL services.
Vodacom COO Pieter Uys however pointed out that he does not expect LLU to happen overnight as it is a complicated process that will take time to complete.
Own fiber backhaul
Vodacom is investing heavily in their own fiber network which will significantly enhance their backhaul capacity and enable the cellular provider to launch improved broadband offerings.
Uys said that backhaul capacity is currently one of Vodacom’s biggest restraining factors for their broadband growth and potential upgrades, which is why the company decided to build their own fiber backbones.
When Vodacom’s fiber network is developed the company will be well positioned to enhance their own current wireless broadband services and also take advantage of other last mile access technologies, like ADSL, to bring broadband services to consumers.
