iPhone 4S battery bug caused by location service feature?

iPhone 4S users are reporting drastic drops in battery life even when all user controlled applications are off, an issue that could be caused by the device’s Location Services feature.

“See, it appears that iOS 5′s GM release introduced a bug that causes the Setting Time Zone function to keep the location tracking circuitry running constantly, draining battery power considerably,” according to Oliver Haslam of iDownloadBlog.

Some iPhone users are reporting that their devices only last “a couple of hours” at best even when not in use, far shorter than the claimed 200 hour standby time the iPhone 4S spec sheet boasts.

There is no official response from Apple as yet, though Apple engineers have been contacting iPhone 4S users to inquire about device usage. They have also asked some users to install diagnostic tools on their devices which will send feedback to Apple HQ.
