SA gets tough on spammers
The protection of personal information bill, which will be debated by the South African Law Commission this week, aims to clamp down on businesses using customers details without their permission, the Sunday Independent reported.
Under the bill, email addresses and cellphone numbers are deemed private information and sending emails or texts offering products or services in the absence of prior written permission from the recipient would be illegal.
The bill proposes the establishment of an independent Information Protection Commmission to enforce the law.
Failure to comply with a order from the commission to stop sending spam would be a criminal offence punishable by a fine or up to 10 years in prison, according to the bill, which will go before the justice minister after the Law Commission.
