iPad 3 display production kicks off
According to Richard Shim, an analyst at DisplaySearch, production of the display panel for the iPad 3 has begun.
“It’s happening, QXGA, 2048×1536. Panel production has started [for the iPad 3]. There’s [sic] three suppliers,” said Shim.
Shim confirmed other reports that cite the three suppliers as Samsung, Sharp and LGD. Apple is sourcing the display panels from three suppliers to avoid supply challenges that may arise from producing such a high resolution 10-inch-class screen.
“It takes a couple of weeks for the production to go to the ODMs (the manufacturers). Then the manufacturer puts them in the housing. Then, that goes off to shipment. We could start seeing finished devices produced in December. And then being ready to be shipped in January. With volumes gearing up in February and March,” Shim went on.
The new display will use IPS technology found in previous generation Apple devices, rather than AMOLED technology adopted by other smartphone and tablet PC vendors, Shim concluded.
