'Virtual events' shrink world
Cisco Systems SA executive Aggrey Rantloane also said that advances in technology could solve problems facing the justice system in this country by establishing "virtual courts".
"We could have a system where, for example, technology could be used for a case involving someone being held in Port Elizabeth and also charged in Polokwane being heard by the court there in real-time.
"This would save time, manpower and the money required to move the accused from the coast to up-country for the case to be heard. Instead of taking days moving people and documents around, it could be done in a few minutes if, for example, the accused was up for remand."
Rantloane said he had experienced a life-like "virtual conference" within the Cisco organisation, which is a multinational company with more than 63000 employees all over the world and annual revenue in 2007 of $35-billion (about R280-billion).
"We had executives speaking from all over the world and projected on to a stage where they all appeared to be taking part in the same presentation."
Rantloane was speaking at the announcement of the third Eastern Cape ICT summit, to be held at NMMU on Thursday, July 24.
It will be preceded by a gala dinner the previous evening.
Chief executive of organising company Imbizo Events, of Port Elizabeth Motse Mfuleni said that 10 leading speakers – including Rantloane – had been lined up for the summit, the third in the province since 2006.
They would include Hewlett Packard SA chief executive Thoko Mokgosi, who had won various awards, including being judged the country‘s "most influential woman" last year.
"More information on the Eastern Cape government ICT policies is also expected to be announced and we have made special arrangements this year for networking and one-on-one meetings," said Mfuleni.
