iPad 3 already sold out

iPad 3: The New iPad

Want to get your hands on one of those high-resolution new iPads announced last week by Apple? Well you may have to wait a bit.

Customers who pre-ordered the gadget through Apple’s website can no longer expect to receive it on Friday when the first batch of iPads will ship, because of a deluge of orders, Apple said in a statement over the weekend.

“Customer response to the new iPad has been off the charts and the quantity available for pre-order has been purchased,” Apple said in a statement. “Customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date.”

Customers can still try to purchase a new iPad at one of the company’s retail stores, but that might involve a monumental effort since long lines for the gadgets are likely to start forming days before the scheduled Friday launch.

The new iPad was announced last Wednesday, featuring a higher resolution screen, larger battery and more powerful processor than the current iPad 2. It goes on sale in the US, Canada, Britain, France and Germany on Friday.
