FNB downtime causes user backlash

First national bank

First National Bank (FNB) experienced downtime today, causing a backlash from customers on social media platforms like Twitter.

“Nothing is working, atms, internet banking, cellphone banking, pos machines nothing!” said one MyBroadband member. “Why don’t they use incontact to notify their customers that something is wrong? My wife was also embarrassed at the pharmacy,” said another.

The official FNB representative on Twitter confirmed that “all FNB systems have been down since 5pm. Working to get back up and running tonite [sic] still. Apologies for your pain”.

Around 19:00 FNB CEO Michael Jordaan said that they were still struggling to get their online and cellphone banking online. “Cards, point-of-sale and ATMs should all be working smoothly though,” Jordaan said on Twitter.

Jordaan explained that the source of the downtime was a power failure in Randburg, with the added problem of backup power failure.

Raj Makanjee, the bank’s chief information officer, said the error occurred around 5pm.
