Digital migration subsidy welcomed
The government would pay R490 of the R700 required to buy the signal box needed once the switch from analogue to digital broadcasting was completed in 2011, it was announced on Thursday.
This would cost the government a total of R2.45 billion.
"The possibility that government is considering utilising the Universal Service and Access Fund to subsidise about five million poorest TV-owning households, is in itself a victory for the realisation of an inclusive information society," wrote CEO of the Universal Service and Access Agency of SA James Theledi in a statement.
The subsidy would be offered only to households dependent on social grants.
All those television viewers without satellite dishes would need the signal boxes to receive the digital signal.
The digital signal would be switched on at the beginning of November this year and the analogue signal would be switched off in November.
