Samsung, Qualcomm keen on wireless charging
Mobile technology companies, Samsung and Qualcomm have formed an organisation to push for industry-wide adoption of a wireless charging standard.
The organisation, known as the Alliance for Wireless Power (AWP) was announced at the CITA 2012 show in New Orleans on 7 May, and hopes to “promote global standardization of a wireless power transfer technology.”
Qualcomm is no stranger to wireless charging; the company debuted the WiPower wireless charging system back in 2009. Meanwhile, Samsung have noted that they may show a wireless charging accessory with its new Galaxy S III flagship smartphone.
Qi wireless charging technology currently promoted by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) requires wireless charging via two metallic surfaces. The AWP hopes to develop a product that can charge though any material from a single power source located anywhere nearby a device.
