Global broadband uptake rockets
According to the latest market share report from Infonetics Research subscriptions are expected to grow to over 195 million in 2008.
The study also predicts that global uptake of DSL ports will continue its steady annual growth through to 2008, while revenue will stay even in 2005, then grow slowly through to 2008.
In the first quarter of 2005, the EMEA and Asia Pacific regions accounted for 75 per cent (almost 13 million) of all ports shipped, noted Michael Howard, principal analyst of Infonetics Research and author of the report.
However, he added that "the big surprise" came from the Central and Latin America region, which jumped an amazing 134 per cent between the fourth quarter of 2004 and the first quarter of 2005 to match North America’s output of two million DSL ports.
"Some major deployments are underway in the population centres on the Andean-Brazilian continent, explaining the surge in Central and Latin America’s DSL port shipments," said Howard.
"The other three world regions followed the usual pattern of a decrease in the first quarter, allowing the usually much smaller Central and Latin America to reach parity with North America, if only for a quarter."
According to the Infonetics study, overall 37 per cent of total DSL revenue comes from EMEA, 29 per cent from Asia Pacific, 20 per cent from North America, and 14 per cent from Central and Latin America.
Alcatel, Huawei, and Siemens were found to hold the top three spots in worldwide DSL aggregation hardware DSL port and revenue market share.
