Telkom and IS peering link debacle
IS has received singular reports of congestion on their system and for the past year have tried to get SAIX (Telkom’s Internet branch that sells international bandwidth) to upgrade the system.
The problem might be partly related to the peering link (the pipe connecting IS directly to SAIX) between IS and SAIX.
There is congestion on the peering link and SAIX refuse to upgrade the link because they state that the traffic from IS’s ADSL users is not peering traffic according to Geoff Rehmet, IS’s new product development specialist.
Rehmet stated that Telkom’s policy of distinguishing between peering and non-peering traffic is “without precedent overseas” and that should they continue with this policy the user will be forced to pay unnecessary additional costs.
“We are doing our best to manage the issue but the only way to resolve it is to get Telkom to upgrade the link which we have been trying to do for the past year,” stated Rehmet.
The battle to upgrade the peering link between IS and SAIX is ongoing and whilst many of the contentious issues have been resolved there are still outstanding matters.
The resolution of these issues is imminent according to Rehmet although the exact deadline is hard to provide at this point in the negotiations.
Mr. Rehmet pointed out that system problems, international bandwidth issues and problems with provisioning of the Telkom IPC for our ADSL users are most likely the main reasons for any IS ADSL related problems. The peering link debacle is however not helping IS in the quest to improve the service for their ADSL customers.
