DoC Colloquium on Telecoms Costs kicks off today
The focus on reducing telecommunication costs is the same but the panel of speakers is slightly different.
Dr. Ivy Matsepe-Cassaburri, Minister of Communications, is down as the opening speaker.
Matsepe-Cassaburri failed to open the proceedings of the first colloquium held in June this year but according to her office the Minister will be at the proceedings and will usher in the event at 9:15am sharp.
The keynote address is by Dr. Tim Kelly from the International Telecommunication Union and he will discuss global developments in telecommunications.
Mr. Paris Mashile from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) will be representing the regulator and hopefully cast some light on the role that ICASA will play in reducing prices.
The deputy Minister of Communications, Mr. Radharkrishna Padayachie, will also make a presentation and perhaps throw a bit of light on the progress made by the DoC regarding price reduction in the telecommunications arena since the last colloquium.
The rest of Tuesday and Wednesday will involve presentations by the colloquium working group and breakaway sessions.
The programme is tightly co-ordinated and looks to reveal a few interesting ideas on how the telecommunications sector in South Africa can move forward.
Whilst the way forward is murky it is becoming increasingly clear that the South African Department of Communications cannot afford to procrastinate for another year.
Aggressive and drastic changed in the telecommunication industry is required in South Africa if we are to even consider ourselves an attractive destination for foreign investors.
